Not a Monomorium, unless my eyes deceive me.  I think I see spines on the propodeum.

I'm guessing Aphaenogaster tennesseensis. (Also I have a NTA to submit sometime.)

You have to tell us why you think so MrILTA, or Harpegnathos might be stingy about giving you points. :~)

I can provide an explain why I agree with him. I believe it is A. tennesseensis because it apparently lacks striae around the postpetiole and its postpetiole is wider than it is long.

Also they're covered in tiny white spots. I think they're the only species that comes in such bright coloring on a regular basis too. The only thing that makes me think I'm wrong is the spines don't...

Hm, nice ant It's as far as I can see a Myrmicinae, but I'm not sure about the genus. Myrmica or others doesn't look like that, the most probable is Aphaenogaster. There are many species I didn't seen...

Re: Name That Ant #138 (13 January 2011) [big image file size]

I'm going to guess Aphaenogaster mariae. It seems to be the best fit for both the way the thorax is shaped and the coloration to me. Aphaenogaster fulva was a close second, so that would be my second...

Re: Name That Ant #138 (13 January 2011) [big image file size]

My guess is Aphaenogaster tennesseensis.  I don't see the striae on the gaster that would mark A. mariae.  I don't see the frontal carinae well enough to eliminate A. lamellidens, so I'll just guess...

Re: Name That Ant #138 (13 January 2011) [big image file size]

I often see A. lamellidens confused with this species on the internet, but the near complete lack of erect setae suggests to me that those guessing A. tennesseensis are correct.

Re: Name That Ant #138 (13 January 2011) [big image file size]

That is what I was waiting to read, Alex! This NTA is solved! The lack of erect setae clearly distinguishes A. tennesseensis from all the other guesses. (Well wait, not sure about those in other...

I'll give MILTA his full 20 points, and he'll get 5 more if he posts his NTA.  10 points each for those who agreed with A. tennesseensis: saL, Myrmecos2, and Harpegnathos.  Ant Catcher11 is busted...

I changed my guess because I was thinking that maybe the picture wasn't clear enough to show the striae. I just started second guessing myself the longer the thread stayed open.
